Welcome!
AGN is a group sponsored by the University of Maryland Department of Astronomy. Our goals include facilitating community between the women undergraduate and graduate students studying astronomy. We discuss the challenges women in science face, while providing a safe space for sensitive and respectful dialog, as well as give graduate students a chance to share their experiences through this undergraduate mentoring opportunity. We meet monthly for evening snacks and discussion, every other week for social events, and arrange community education events. We also leverage partnerships with other student organizations and committees in astronomy and CMNS to provide broader-reaching workshops for all students. We welcome undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers!
Who are we?
The group has a tiered leadership with mentoring
opportunities right from the start. A senior graduate
student guides a junior graduate student, who holds the
role of President. The President and an undergraduate
representative plan the monthly meetings and facilitate
open discussion with assistance from additional members.
AGN is currently led by Laura Lenkic and Sara Frederick.
